The Bluffs covers San Angelo's far west side north of Sherwood Way, built across a series of low hills that put many of its homes a bit higher than the rest of the city, with long views east toward the downtown skyline. The West Houston Harte Expressway runs through the area, and its commercial strip carries one of the city's busiest clusters of hotels and restaurants, while the residential streets climb away from it. Many of those street names have an English accent, with Edinburgh, Burlington, Mayfair, Stratford, Coventry, Manchester and Lyndhurst among them. Most of the houses are three- and four-bedroom brick ranches from the 1960s and 1970s, joined over the years by newer New Traditional homes, and the Upper Bluffs to the north holds larger estate-style houses on half-acre lots, some backing right up to San Angelo State Park. Farther west the area turns rural and partly unincorporated. Those hills, open views and big lots are what people love about the Bluffs, and they also mean more wind exposure, more fence line, more exterior surface and more sun on everything than a tucked-in lot downtown.
The best-known neighbor here is San Angelo State Park, which wraps around O.C. Fisher Reservoir just to the north with miles of trails for hiking, biking and riding and the official state longhorn herd grazing its pastures. Mountainview Park serves families closer in, Bonham Elementary and Lone Star Middle School are nearby, and Central High is an easy drive. Sunset Mall and the stores and restaurants along Sherwood Way sit just outside the neighborhood, and the expressway puts downtown and Angelo State within a few minutes. Wildlife from the park edges into backyards now and then, and the open country to the west means dust rides in on a strong wind. On a clear evening, the view back across the city from the higher streets is one of the better ones in town, which is part of why people here keep their homes in good shape.
